First of the Second

So it's a new month! I had originally intended to blog every week, but I'm a lazy bastard so that didn't happen. I'm now back in Manchester, I've been doing exams for the last two weeks so all my spare time has been dedicated to sleeping, eating, socializing and occasionally revising. Thank fuck that's all over now! The dissertation work has to start soon, but for the moment I can just relax and listen to some music.

So to business! My library has absorbed a lot of juicy new tracks since last time I posted, so I'll cease the babbling about myself and get on with sharing the music.

Got Your Money - Wu Tang Clan vs The Beatles
I found this while trawling the Hype Machine yesterday. Put together by a fella named Tom Caruana, the album 'Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers' is fantastic. It's not your straightforward mash-up album, he tends to use whole Wu-tang songs but samples a range of Beatles songs on every track. Give the song a listen and if you like what you hear, you can download the full album for free right here.

Scenario (Live on Arsenio Hall) - A Tribe Called Quest
While I was at home for Christmas, my little brother asked me if I had old-school rap I could give him. After realizing that I didn't have that much to suggest, I went hunting for some decent songs that I could recommend. This performance of Scenario by a Tribe Called Quest is ace, recorded for the Arsenio Hall show in 1992. Busta Rhymes gives a stellar performance, but is marginally upstaged by his own hat.

You Got What I Need - Freddie Scott
While I was on the same old-school rap hunt, I ran into Biz Markie's 'Just a Friend' on YouTube. Wondering where I had heard the chorus before, I found this soulful gem from Freddie Scott after a bit of internet foraging.

Drumstick - Giant
If you fancy a decent bit of drum and bass, turn up your speakers and give this a listen.

Heartbreaker (Kris Menace Remix) - Metronomy
After looking at the lineup for my friend Rohan's club night Chalk at Sankeys, I went looking for some tracks from the headline act - Kris Menace. This remix he's done of Metronomy's 'Heartbreaker' is awesome, I love the original track and this remix has helped me love it a little bit more.

Scattered Black & Whites - Elbow
Elbow's album 'The Seldom Seen Kid' passed me by when it was released last year. I heard good things about it, but since I've never been a big fan of Elbow I wasn't going to go out of my way to hear it. This track (off the 2001 album 'Asleep in the Back') has made me an Elbow fan, I'll have to try and find some more stuff by them when I get the chance.

Moth - Burial & Four Tet
Really good collaboration between Burial and Four TetA repeating minimal beat provides a foundation for the added layers of percussion, background pitch and vocals.

Silas the Magic Car - Mew
Mew seems to be one of these bands that attracts utterly devoted fans. I've seen and heard a lot of ranting and raving about the genius of Mew, after a quick search I found a whole bunch of tracks that I really enjoyed. Silas the Magic Car is one of their more chilled out tracks, I hope you enjoy!

Boy From School (Hot Chip Cover) - Grizzly Bear
I LOVE HOT CHIP. I really do, I've listened to their first three albums about a bazillion times. 'And I was a Boy From School' is one of my favourite tracks off the 2006 album 'The Warning'. This cover version by Grizzly Bear is lovely, very different to the original. Swapping jagged electronic beats for an acoustic guitar and strings really works, well worth a listen

Your Hand in Mine - Explosions in the Sky
I know absolutely fuck all about this band, I just really like the song.
